This is a screenshot from a recent OTV interview with former security chief Jamil Al Sayyed, who was held for four years as a suspect in the Hariri assassination but then released due to lack of evidence.
In addition to the close up on Sayyed, OTV also decided to have a wide shot showing off the sign above his head, and frequently cutting to it throughout the broadcast.
OTV of course is not the only channel that allows politicians to hang their propaganda as wallpaper during an interview. It’s one of the many (unethical) ways in which local television propels the old guard of Lebanese politics.
Rather than giving a voice to the voiceless, Lebanese media outlets surrender their airwaves to elite power brokers, invading our political scene–and living rooms– with their messages.
