I’m really glad we got to see Wadi Rum yesterday and this sunset. Some friends told us they tried to go today but were dissuaded by their hotel management who warned that the road south was unstable.

This seemed to be confirmed by the number of military vehicles we saw on the highway as we were leaving the Wadi this morning. Our taxi said they were heading over to “occupy” the area of unrest in Maan. He attributed this to a vague “tribal” rivalry which had manifested a week earlier at a local university. But people here – at least at our hotel – don’t seem to be worried and say the security forces have things under control.

Yet as I get ready to head home to Beirut tomorrow, I’m now hearing about the Israeli airstrike on Syria. Looks like there is no shortage of instability coming my way, no matter where I roam in this Middle East.
